An open letter to Mr. Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Cojuangco Aquino III

I know how stressful your life is, especially this past few weeks. Your term is coming to an end and your presidential candidate is losing in all polls.

I would like to know:

  • How are you right now?
  • What are you thinking?
  • How are you handling all of this?
  • Are you still eating enough?
  • Do you still sleep deep at night?
  • Do you even pray to God?
  • If you do, what are those prayers?
  • Do you pray for good things or against other people?

There’s so much to ask and there’s too much trouble all around our country today.

I remember the last presidential election. It was my first time to vote. My father told me to choose you. He said you will be a good president, good for our country. I was convinced by my father and all through the years of your term, despite all of the dismay my fellow countrymen expressed, I trusted that your decisions will be for the better of the majority. It was just this past few months, when the campaign started, that I lost all the trust that was left for you.

I was an undecided voter. My mind was open for all presidential candidates. I listened to each of their political platforms and observed how they campaign themselves. At the beginning, it was all positive. It was all about how they will make this country a better place to live. But as the election day comes closer, everything turned upside-down. The campaign is now one hell of a defamation against each other. And worst, against one candidate Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Personally, I do not want Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to run for the position. It may be selfish but I think Mayor Duterte does not deserve a life like yours. He deserve to be treated well and to be taken cared of as much as he did for Davao City.

It is clear to us that you want Mar Roxas to win your position. And by that, it means you will do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING to give him the title. (up to this point, i still want to give you the benefit of the doubt) But guess what, all of your tactics look so desperate. It is so obvious that you and your Liberal party team are threatened by Mayor Duterte. You even convinced other parties to be one in destroying the Mayor. And why is that Mr. President? Have you forgotten what you told us? “KAYO ANG BOSS KO!”. As a president, you should NOT campaign any of those candidates. Instead, you should tell the people to vote whoever they think will make this country the best place to live in. Let the people be the witness of the candidates’ good deeds, not just through flowery words. YOU SHOULD BE NEUTRAL. YOU SHOULD BE A ROLE MODEL. If you can’t help yourself from endorsing a candidate, you should’ve told him to not talk against any one of the candidates. You should’ve told him not to dishonor any one of them no matter how corrupt, how evil, how stupid they might look in everybody’s eyes and just focus on themselves. In that way, people might’ve respected your candidate in the way you wanted. But then again, it is not what happened. You let them be the evil in our eyes. They say that the mayor do not have the good values for the children, that his words are so vulgar. But how about the other candidates? Is using children to degrade a person a good value? Is it the right way to teach the children a good moral?

Mr. President, you are in the position to stop all this foolish acts, all the black propaganda. You are entitled to provide PEACE and ORDER in this country. But what are you doing? What are your actions against these? The answer is NOTHING. You did not correct the mistakes of your people, of those in authority. Instead, you supported it. YOU ARE BIASED. Many of us are very very very disappointed of you.

But Mr. President, you always have a choice. You can still make the situation a better one. You should speak up not for your candidate, but for the people. Your term has not yet ended. Wake up, open your eyes, listen to the cry of the people. BE FAIR MR. PRESIDENT. If your conscience still matters, listen to it. There’s still too much to say, but for now I’ll end this letter with a quote.

“Be honest even if others are not, even if others will not, even if others cannot.”

God bless our country!
